The best wellbeing rooms share a few core characteristics. The lighting is warm, indirect and adjustable, with no harsh fluorescent overhead. The acoustics are treated so the room feels noticeably quieter than the open-plan floor outside. There is a visual focal point that does not involve a screen, something soft and ambient like a starlight ceiling. And the room can be set to different modes depending on the need, whether that is a quick five-minute reset or a longer wind-down session.
The critical difference between a wellbeing room that works and one that gets ignored is intention. If it looks and feels like every other room in the building, people will not use it. If it feels genuinely different the moment they walk in, they will.

Burnout is a structural issue, not a personal one
The World Health Organisation classified burnout as an occupational phenomenon in 2019. Since then, the data has only reinforced the point. Open-plan offices, back-to-back video calls, constant notifications and the blurring of work and personal boundaries have created an environment where sustained focus and genuine recovery are both difficult to achieve in the same building. Telling employees to “take a break” means nothing if the only break space available is a noisy kitchen or a meeting room with glass walls.

1. Lighting that calms rather than stimulates
Lighting is the single most impactful element in a wellbeing room. Standard office lighting (4000K+ fluorescent or flat LED panels) is designed for alertness and task visibility. In a space meant for recovery, it works against the purpose entirely.
A wellbeing room needs warm, dimmable lighting in the 2200K to 2700K range. Light sources should be indirect, bounced off walls or ceilings rather than shining directly at the occupant. Common mistakes
Several patterns undermine wellbeing rooms in practice.
Repurposing a meeting room without changing the environment is the most common. If the ceiling is still flat white tiles, the lights are still fluorescent panels and the furniture is still office chairs, it is not a wellbeing room. It is a meeting room with a sign on the door.
Overcomplicating the technology is another. If operating the room requires a training session or a manual, something has gone wrong. Wellbeing rooms should be operable by anyone, immediately, with no instruction.
Restricting access defeats the purpose. If the room is locked, requires a booking system with manager approval, or is only available to specific teams, it becomes a controlled resource rather than a genuinely accessible space. The most effective wellbeing rooms operate on an open-door, first-come basis.
Neglecting maintenance lets the room deteriorate. A wellbeing room that smells stale, has a broken light or a dead plant sends a worse message than having no room at all. Maintenance should be scheduled, not reactive.
