FIBRE OPTIC CABLES
Single-Core Bare Fibre Cable
A Single-Core Bare Fibre Cable consists of a single uninsulated core made from PMMA (PolyMethylMethAcrylate) that transmits cold light from an illuminator without involving electricity or generating heat in the fibre itself.
These uninsulated bare fibre cables are commonly used for precise lighting applications, such as in signage or star ceilings, where they deliver concentrated light at the cable’s end. Because they lack an outer protective sheath, they can also emit a soft glow from the sides when used with the appropriate light source, creating a diffuse lighting effect.
KEY FEATURES
No Electricity in Fibre
Light is transmitted from the illuminator. The fibre carries no electrical current, making it safe for wet and sensitive environments.
No Heat Generation
PMMA fibre does not generate heat at the light point, making it ideal for close-proximity and touch-safe applications.
Flexible & Compact
Small diameter cables that bend easily for signage, architectural models, star ceilings, and concept lighting designs.
Custom Cut & Prefabricated
Available in rolls or custom-cut and prefabricated by LightEFX to suit specific project requirements.
APPLICATIONS
Star ceilings
Signage lighting
Architectural models
Concept & scale models
Decorative lighting
Sensory rooms
FINISHING OPTIONS
The ends of the fibre cables can be left with a clean-cut finish or equipped with fibre optic lens fittings, depending on the project. Lens fittings allow designers to manipulate the light output, adjusting beam angles and diffusion without the need for a separate powered LED fixture.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Bare Fibre Optic Cable Questions
What diameter fibre should I choose?
Larger diameters carry more light and produce a brighter, larger point of light. Star ceilings usually mix diameters to give stars of different apparent brightness, with finer 0.50 mm to 1.00 mm fibre for distant stars and 1.50 mm to 3.00 mm for foreground stars. For signage and display work, choose the diameter that matches the size of the light point you want.
How many fibres do I need for a star ceiling?
It depends on the ceiling area and how dense you want the star field to look. The practical limit is usually the port capacity of your illuminator rather than the fibre itself. Send us your ceiling dimensions and the effect you are after and we can work out a fibre count and illuminator combination for you.
Can bare fibre be cut to length on site?
Yes. PMMA fibre cuts cleanly with a sharp blade. A clean, square cut gives the brightest end point, which is why fibres are usually run long and trimmed flush once they are through the ceiling or panel.
Does bare fibre glow along its length or only at the end?
Bare fibre is primarily end-emitting, so the light appears as a bright point at the cut end. Because there is no outer sheath, it also gives off a soft side glow along its length with a suitable light source. If you want a continuous glowing line instead of points of light, use side-emitting cable.
Do I need an illuminator as well as the cable?
Yes. Fibre optic cable transmits light but does not generate it. Every installation needs an illuminator at one end of the fibre bundle. No electricity runs through the fibre itself, which is what makes it safe for bathrooms, pools, and sensory rooms.
Is there a minimum order length?
The minimum is 1 metre, and cable is cut in 1 metre increments. There are no fixed kit sizes, so you can order the exact length your project needs rather than paying for a pre-set roll.
